- The atomic number Z of an element
- is defined as the number of protons contained
- in the nucleus of an atom of that element. The
- atomic mass number is the total number of
- protons and neutrons in the nucleus. Since the
- mass of electrons is insignificant compared with
- the mass of the nucleus, when determining the
- mass of an atom, the mass of the electrons can
- be ignored. Atomic mass is measured in the
- atomic mass unit amu, approximately
- equal to the mass of a proton (and hence
- approximately equal to the mass of a neutron).
